Shopping in Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa

There are a variety of options for shopping in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo for accessories and items inspired by Mexico's rich culture. Most stores break for lunch followed by "siesta time." Usually their business hours are from 9:00AM to 2:00PM and 4:00PM until 8:00PM, Mondays through Saturdays. During high season many shops extend their business hours and are open on Sundays.

Some of the popular shopping novelties found in Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa include Mexican crafts such as ceramics plates and whole dinner sets; carved hard-wood fish sculptures; colorful wooden or clay ceremonial masks; paintings on tree-bark; decorated handcrafted boxes; and the world famous hamacas (hammocks).

Ixtapa
Ixtapa has a boulevard with Shopping Centers and stores alongside. There, you will find something to suit every taste from national and international clothing, leather goods, silver, etc. to traditional Mexican merchandise such as hammocks, clothing made from manta linen, embroidered and woven crafts, cigars, and coffee from one of the best coffee-producing regions in the country.

Artisan Markets
Zihuatanejo - on Ave. Cinco de Mayo (near the main pier)
Ixtapa - located on the Boulevard

Large and colorful artisans markets, Mercado Turístico de Artesanías, boasts more than 200 stands in Zihuatanejo and 80 stands in Ixtapa. In both artisans markets you will be able to find silver; huaraches (handmade leather sandals); and as scarves, ties and handbags inspired by Mexico's rich culture and traditions; one-of-a-kind silver jewelry by leading Mexican artisans.

Platerias
You can find numerous jewelry stores and platerias - where they sell silver jewelry only.
Most of the sterling silver is from the mines in Taxco, a colonial city within Guerrero.

Shells Market
Zihuatanejo - along the Municipal Pier Walk

Walk along the sandy beach and you will see stands selling art made of shells, including, jewelry, decorative pieces, and the shell itself. Just next to the Shells Market, you can visit the base where the fishermen return from the sea with their morning catches to sell them directly to local vendors, chefs, and housewives. The market is open from 10AM to 8 or 9PM
